Magazine Audiences (Total Guitar)

Total Guitar magazine is aimed at people who play guitar and listen to rock and more heavier genres of music.
First of all the magazine title has made the word “guitar” stand out by making it at least three times as big as the world “total”. This straight away tells us that the magazine is going to be about guitar. If this is apparent enough right next to the title is written “Europe's best-selling guitar magazine” which is in bold therefore making it stand out. This would make the magazine audience, of which is guitar players, want to buy the magazine as would want the best.
This edition of “Total Guitar” features “Metallica” we can see this from the main picture being James Hetfield and Kirk Hammet with the band name printed in big letters across the front. Having Metallica as a feature in the magazine it may open up the audience to people who like Metallica as well, this is done by having printed underneath “Metallica”, “The ONLY guitar mag interview!”. Having the word “only” in capitals and underlined meaning they want to emphasize you won't find the interview in any other guitar magazine and may make people buy the magazine so they don't miss out.
The magazine also has a competition to win Kirk Hammet's guitar and amp “worth over a grand”, this would also make the intended audience want to buy the magazine more to try and win the prize, even though the chances are very slim but at the time the buyer might not realise that in all the excitement. The competition advert is in white and red so it stands out from the rest of the front cover and the word “win” is in capital letters so it's eye catching.
The magazine also includes various songs you will be able to learn if you buy the magazine. The songs that are shown on the front of the magazine are of a similar genre to the featured band, therefore making the magazine more attractive to the audience.

  1. Think about how Metallica are represented. What clothes do they wear? What semiology is evident? NVCs? Are magazine audiences 'buying into' a culture?
