Thriller Opening Update: Costumes (Masks)

We decided our character would have a mask for his alter ego. after doing research into what masks were available and what styles of mask we found three masks we liked.

We liked the jigsaw pieces on this mask as it symbolizes there are pieces missing i.e. from our main characters mind as when he dreams of him killing people it's actually happened but he doesn't know.

We also liked this mask for the same reasons as the jigsaw mask as there are cracks in the mask it means there might mean there is something that needs  filling in

We also liked this mask as it was plain and we could incorporate some of the other masks into this one so it's more individual
See Nelson's Mask Post for the final product.

  1. Good work on semiotics here Daniel. Are there existing thrillers which utilise a mask that you could refer to?

  2. Our origional idea to use a mask in our thriller came from watching the opening scene from "The Book of Eli" with a gas masked hunter. We liked the idea of having a mask as it hides the person face and meaning could also be linked with a mask e.g. in "The Book of Eli" the gas mask could represent a war was happening. Some thriller film that use masks are: "The Dark Night", "Halloween", "Scream", "Friday 13th". As you can see from these examples a mask doesn't always represent the person behind it is bad. In our case our person is good and bad, but prodominantly bad when he is wearing the mask as he doesn't have controll over this state of mind
